The pool that gave the place its name
Landmannalaugar means, roughly, the pools of the land's men — named for the settlers, farmers and drovers who crossed this country on horseback and stopped here to bathe. The pool still works the way it always has: a hot geothermal stream runs down off the hillside and meets a cold brook at the edge of the Laugahraun lava field, and where they mix the water settles at around 36 to 40°C. It is a natural bathing place, not a built spa. There is no ticket, no opening hour and no attendant. A boardwalk runs out to the water so you are not crossing sharp lava barefoot.
Bathing etiquette and the rule that keeps it clean
Soap and shampoo are prohibited. The pool drains into a living stream system inside a protected nature reserve, and detergent does real damage to it, so this is not a courtesy request. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and something to put on your feet — sandals or flip-flops — because the ground between the changing area and the water is gravel and boardwalk, and the air temperature is frequently in single figures even when the water is warm. There are no lockers. Most visitors change at the toilet and changing building near the campsite, and the cost of using it is included in the parking fee.
The hut, the campsite and the warden
The mountain hut is run by Ferðafélag Íslands, the Iceland Touring Association, and sleeps 78 across two floors — a large bunk room downstairs and smaller dorms above. It has a fully equipped kitchen with gas stoves, hot and cold running water and utensils, and there is a separate toilet and shower building shared with the campsite, plus an outdoor charcoal grill. A warden is on site through the summer. The season runs approximately from 20 June to 15 September. The campsite is gravel, and FÍ warns explicitly that driving tent pegs in is very difficult and that in wind you will need rocks to hold a tent down.
Book the car park before you book anything else
Since the Environment Agency introduced managed parking, a reservation is compulsory for vehicles arriving between 09:00 and 16:00 during the main season — 20 June to 13 September in 2026 — booked through Parka. Outside those hours no reservation is needed, but the service fee applies at all times. A car of up to five seats costs 1,500 ISK per day, a six-to-nine-seat vehicle 2,450 ISK, and a motorcycle 750 ISK, with coach rates scaling up by size. The fee includes use of the toilets and changing facilities. Bookings for the season open on 1 April, and peak summer dates do sell out.
The one shop, and the fuel you must carry
Landmannalaugar has a shop, which surprises people who have read that the highlands have nothing: Mountain Mall, run by Fjallafang, operates out of three converted American school buses beside the campsite as a shop, a coffee bar and a lounge. It sells hot soup, sandwiches, coffee and pastries, along with basics such as pasta, dried soup, tinned food, camping gas canisters, sunscreen, lip balm and plasters. What it cannot sell you is petrol. There is no fuel station here or anywhere in the interior, so arrive with a full tank from Hrauneyjar and treat everything mechanical as unobtainable until you are back on the lowland roads.
